India’s Pride! Padmashri awardee, Mrs Rajni Bector, owner of Cremica Food Industries Limited and Mrs. Bectors Food Specialities Ltd.(Cremica and English Oven) She was just six years of age when partition happened in 1947. Unfortunately, her home was in Pakistan and she could never go back to it. Overnight, she was without her own home, had to spend seven days under a tree, but she was never homeless as her dreams were always there. Since then, her journey is awe-inspiring. A lady who defied the monitions of time and vagaries of life to create her own kingdom where she reigns as the queen.
LAN: A decision that changed your life?
Mrs Bector (B): I started in 1978 from my backyard but the breakthrough came in 1995. McDonald's came to us for buns, sauces, ketchup, etc. Since then, there is no looking back.
L: How it happened?
B: Someone referred them to go to Mrs Bector. By then all my customers were my happy customers. So, the goodwill was there and of course the quality was of the highest standard.
L: What was your driving force to setup a business in 1978?
B: I had never thought of doing a business in the first place. I love appreciations; happy faces after they eat my food. In business terms, 5 on 5 rating. It is my driving force. Even today, I look for customer satisfaction, not business!
L: What is your secret recipe for success?
B: To me WORK is WORSHIP. I can’t do a mediocre job in anything I do. It has to be spot on, well presented, & well packaged.
L: The most challenging time?
B: Many. I was six and was in Kashmir when the partition happened. We lost everything overnight. I remember how we came to Pathankot. There was firing also. Then in 1980s, there was an attempt on my son’s life. There are challenges everyday but life goes on.
L: Regrets?
B: No regrets. Absolutely no regrets. It’s a beautiful life and I am thankful.
L: Why others can’t do what you have done?
B: Having passion is the first thing and then to work on it as if your whole life depends on it is the next thing. And take others along with you.
L: If your family still doesn’t allow it?
B: A lady is the center point of a family. If you want to do something on your own, you can always find a way out with the help of your family or in laws. But you can’t go with a “My way or highway” attitude. Mold them, slowly and gradually.
L: What you have to say to the ladies of today?
B: You can make or break a family. You want to create something, take a step ahead. But have patience. It takes time for great things to happen. Devote time to your family but don’t take nonsense. If your man beats you, beat him twice so that he doesn’t repeat.
L: You are a Padma shri. How it feels?
B: Amazing! When the President, the PM, the HM and everyone applauded, it felt so serene. I loved every moment of it. I am indebted to them.
